Data foundation

CO2 emissions are derived from resource consumption data in the portfolio, categorized as follows:

Collected Data: Historical consumption data, initially uploaded to the BuildingMinds Platform, can be metered or invoice-based. If not provided monthly, the platform divides values into months and applies vacancy and weather normalization.

Estimated Data: Data estimations, whether from your organization, a third party, or BuildingMinds, to fill gaps in collected data.

Projected Data: Last available historical consumption data from one calendar year, projected into future years up to 2050.

Retrofitted Data: Future retrofits are included in projected values from the planned year, while past retrofits are not considered since their CO2 emission savings are already in historical data.

Process

BuildingMinds processes your data on the BuildingMinds Platform through the following steps:

1. Data is organized into calendar months, either splitting or aggregating it based on the provided data.

2. Vacancy normalization is applied for periods with more than 5% vacancy.

3. Heating degree days, specific to the building's location, are used for normalising heating energy consumption data.

4. Data gaps are checked, and if present, BuildingMinds provides data estimations.

Calendarize resource consumption invoices

If data is provided in form of invoices usually the billing period does not match the calendar month. To calculate the total amount per calendar month the following steps are performed.

  1. Calculate the number of days in the billing period.

    Note

If billing periods of invoices overlap by one day remove the last day for the calculation.

  2. Determine the value per day by dividing the total amount of consumption or price by the days of the billing period.

  3. Determine the number of days for the calendar month for each invoice.

  4. Multiply the number of days by the value per day.

  5. Add the values for the calendar month.

Example: Calendarize resource consumption bills

Steps

Bill 1: September 15 – October 14 Usage: 2,800 kBtu

Bill 2: October 15 – November 14 Usage: 3,200 kBtu

1. Calculate the number of days in the billing period.

30 days

31 days

2. Determine the value per day by dividing the total amount of consumption or price by the days of the billing period.

2,800 kBtu / 30 days = 93.33 kBtu

3,100 kBtu / 31 days = 103.23 kBtu

3. Determine the number of days for the calendar month for each invoice.

First Month on Bill: 30th September to 15th October 15 + 1 = 16 Second Month on Bill: 30 - 16 = 14

First Month on Bill: 15th October to 31st October 16 + 1 = 17 Second Month on Bill:  31 - 17 = 14

4. Multiply the number of days by the value per day.

September: 16 days * 93.33 kBtu = 1,493.28 kBtu October: 14 days * 93.33 kBtu = 1,306.62 kBtu

October: 17 days * 103.23 kBtu = 1,754.91 kBtu November: 14 days * 103.23 kBtu = 1,445.22 kBtu

5. Add the values for the calendar month.

14 Days in October = 1,306.62 kBtu

17 Days in October = 1,754.91 kBtu
